Grandma’s Sugar Cookies


1 ½ cups powdered sugar
1 cup butter, softened
1 tsp vanilla
½ tsp almond extract
1 egg
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cream of tartar
Granulated sugar


  1. Beat powdered sugar and butter in large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed.
  2. Stir in vanilla, almond extract and egg.
  3. Stir in flour, baking soda and cream of tartar.
  4. Cover and refrigerate about 2 hours or until firm.
  5. Heat the oven to 375 degrees.
  6. Roll half of dough at a time 1/8 inch thick on lightly floured cloth-covered surface.
  7. Cut into desired shapes.
  8. Place about 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
  9. Sprinkle with granulated sugar or decorate with frosting and desired candies.
  10. Bake 7 to 8 minutes or until light brown.
  11. Remove from cookie sheet to wire rack.
